So Vancouver is actually responsible for good music for a change. No offence to friends or contemporaries, but let’s face it: this city isn’t exactly renowned for its musical output into the world. Foreigners seem to associate the country with Nickleback, Celine Dion and Avril Lavigne. We are sorry. Some slightly cooler people go “oh yeah, Metric is from there, yeah?” Yeah.
Anyway, because I’m slow to catch on, I just discovered that Gigi, a Vancouver-based project, just released an album featuring many awesome singers, all in a sort of 60s hit parade spirit. Plenty of vintage reverb, love and forlorn tunes of pop gold. Such singers include Zac Pennington of The Parenthetical Girls, for example. I’m reminded of groups like Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura, The School… but a bit less British sounding. It’s charming.
