MIXTAPE: Music For Mopes

Image taken from Bas Jan Ader's I'm Too Sad To Tell You--brilliant art piece, by the way.

Contrary to the wry title of this mix I’ve compiled for your listening pleasure, this isn’t completely sad music. I just like alliteration, and the idea of those awful music mixes that prescribe what you should listen to it for: “music for cocktail parties”, “music for easy listening”, and sometimes they try to sneak past by saying “sounds” instead of “music” to appear more sophisticated. Anyway, I’m only playing. The contents here come mostly from 80s indie bands with a couple examples that are sourced from the bookending decades. The sounds are probably more akin to melancholy rather than straight up moping.

1. “You Should All Be Murdered” by Another Sunny Day

2. “Meet The Lovely Jenny Brown” by The Bachelor Pad

3. “Around The World in Eighty Days” by Brighter

4. “Slip Away” by Metro Trinity

5. “White Noise” by The Monochrome Set

6. “Between Hello and Goodbye” by The Field Mice

7. “Dishwashing Liquid” by The Widdershins

8. “In a Nutshell” by Orange Juice

9. “Bizarre Love Triangle” by Even As We Speak

10. “A Million Miles” by Brian

11. “Something Wrong Somewhere” by McCarthy
